Today is Juneteenth, a powerful reminder of freedom delayed and the ongoing journey toward justice, equity, and celebration of Black history and culture. As we reflect, I encourage you to explore stories—both real and reimagined—that center African American history and experiences.
One such story is my historical fantasy novel, Harriet’s Escape: Harriet Tubman Reimagined, which blends speculative fiction with real-world legacy to honor one of our greatest freedom fighters. Whether through nonfiction or imaginative retellings, there’s so much to learn and appreciate by reading works by African American authors who shine a light on our past and present.
📸 Imaginarium Book Festival Highlights
Thank you to everyone who stopped by my table at this year’s Imaginarium Book Festival a few weeks ago! It was such a joy to connect with fellow book lovers, and I’m excited to share a few snapshots from the event.
🦸🏽♀️ Middle Grade Milestone!
Big news: The first draft of Niya Everlight: Quest for Control, the debut book in my Superheroine-in-Training series, is now complete and officially in the hands of my editor! This project has been a true labor of love and I can’t wait to share more as we move closer to publication.
📍Upcoming Event: Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum Block Party
Come celebrate rhythm, creativity, and community with me on June 28 from 9–5 in Annapolis, Maryland! I’ll be an exhibiting author at this year’s block party, hosted by the Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum and the Maryland Commission on African American History & Culture. It’s a full day of:
🎶 Live Music
🖼️ Artist Exhibitions
👧🏾 Family-Friendly Activities
🧘🏽♂️ Mindfulness & Wellness
🎭 Live Performances
🛍️ Local Vendors (including me!)
Let the beats move you, the art inspire you, and the power of community uplift you. I’d love to see you there!
Thank you, as always, for your continued support. May this Juneteenth be a day of reflection, learning, and joy.
In solidarity and story,
N.D. Jones, Author of Harriet's Escape
